Chelsea chính là ông lớn nhóm Big Six cuối cùng mà Man City đụng độ ở giai đoạn lượt đi năm nay, cũng như niềm hy vọng cuối cùng của cả Premier League vì một giải đấu bớt nhàm chán hơn dưới sự thống trị của thầy trò Pep Guardiola.

Thậm chí chưa cần nghĩ đến cho cả Premier League, đây là hy vọng cho chính Chelsea nếu vẫn còn muốn cạnh tranh ngôi vô địch mùa giải này. Từ vị thế đội bóng Châu Âu cuối cùng duy trì thành tích bất bại trên mọi đấu trường, đội chủ sân Stamford Bridge bỗng chốc thua đến 2/3 trận đấu gần đây nhất trước Tottenham và Wolverhampton giữa tuần qua.

Thế là Chelsea mất dần tư cách đối thủ đồng hành của Man City cũng như Liverpool trên đường đua ngai vàng với khoảng cách 8-10 điểm. Premier League nước Anh lại khắc nghiệt hơn hẳn, đặc biệt trong tháng Mười Hai dày đặc lịch thi đấu nên không đến nỗi khó hiểu cho sự sa sút trông thấy của Chelsea.

Tài xoay tua hợp lý và có điều kiện hơn của Guardiola so với Sarri đã sẵn tạo lợi thế lớn cho Man City trước Chelsea, khi thể lực của các vị khách không bị bào mòn như chủ nhà vốn đã và đang phải cày ải quá nhiều. Có thể thấy thêm nữa rằng Man City cũng vượt trội hơn hẳn Chelsea ở sự đa dạng của những miếng đánh, với bàn thắng có thể xuất phát từ mọi hướng, mọi vị trí mắt xích. Không phải ngẫu nhiên khi đội chủ sân Etihad tiếp tục đang sở hữu nhiều bàng thắng nhất giải đấu.

Bên cạnh đây, yếu tố tinh thần so sánh giữa đôi bên cũng làm nên sự khác biệt chiếu theo hai hướng phong độ trái ngược hiện tại.
