Milan không đặt nặng mục tiêu tại Europa League, đấu trường hạng hai tại châu Âu này là nơi để BHL Rossoneri thử nghiệm thêm các phương án chiến thuật và nhân sự, làm tiền đề cho việc thi đấu ở Serie A. Mục tiêu của Milan chỉ là vượt qua vòng bảng, để các cầu thủ hầu hết còn non kinh nghiệm có dịp được trải qua bầu không khí vòng knock-out, nhằm phục vụ cho việc trở lại Champions League trong tương lai.

Bảng F thực chất không phải bảng đấu dễ dàng cho Milan bởi ngoại trừ đội bóng vô danh Dudelange của Luxembourg, cả Betis và Olympiakos đều có thực lực mạnh. Trong khi đó với những gì mà NHM được chứng kiến ở trận ra quân, Milan không hẳn đã vượt trội so với… Dudelange.

Olympiakos đã rất nhiều lần đụng độ Juventus tại Champions League nói riêng và cúp châu Âu nói chung, nhưng họ đã không gặp Milan trong gần 60 năm qua, kể từ khi đôi bên giáp mặt nhau ở vòng sơ loại Cúp C1 1959/60. Ngay cả Juve mùa 2014/15, năm đầu tiên của HLV Massimiliano Allegri cũng từng rất khó khăn mới vượt qua được Olympiakos tại vòng bảng (Juve thua 0-1 ở lượt đi, thắng lại 3-2 trên sân nhà). Nói vậy để thấy Milan không dễ “nuốt” được đối thủ Hy Lạp này.

Gonzalo Higuain sẽ chỉ kịp bình phục chấn thương để dự trận đấu tại Serie A vào cuối tuần, nhường lại vị trí trung phong cho Patrick Cutrone. Tiền đạo 20 tuổi này không phải lựa chọn quá tệ của Milan, nhưng anh còn rất non kinh nghiệm ở đấu trường châu Âu. Cutrone đã ghi 13 bàn ở Europa League mùa trước, nhưng đều vào lưới các đối thủ vô danh như Ludogorets, Austria Vienna, Rijeka, Shkendija và Craiova. Trước một đối thủ mới mẻ và cũng có thực lực như Olympiakos, Cutrone không dễ nổ súng, nhất là khi vấn đề tiếp vận từ tuyến sau của Milan chưa bao giờ ổn thỏa. 

Sức mạnh của Olympiakos nằm chủ yếu tại hàng thủ. Dù là đội bóng mạnh nhất Hy Lạp, nhưng ngay cả ở giải quốc nội, gần đây Olympiakos cũng có xu hướng thi đấu chắc chắn. Có đến 3/4 trận chính thức gần nhất, Olympiakos giữ sạch lưới. Mùa này Olympiakos đã thắng tới 4 trận chính thức với cách biệt sát nút.

Thế trận chắc chắn là điều được tiên liệu trước, Milan sẽ rất khó để giành trọn vẹn 3 điểm đêm nay.
