Nếu Del Bosque loại ra 1 trong 2 tiền vệ trung tâm nói trên, chuyển Iniesta vào lại trung lộ và sử dụng các cầu thủ chạy cánh thứ thiệt, Pedro và Jesus Navas, số 9 ảo của ông hẳn đã lợi hại hơn nhiều. Điều này bộc lộ rõ ở trận gặp BĐN tại vòng tứ kết. Sau 90 phút tiqui-taca mà chẳng thể đe dọa đối phương, việc Navas có mặt trên sân đã ngay lập tức đẩy nhanh tốc độ trong lối chơi của TBN và tạo ra nhiều cơ hội trong hiệp phụ.

Nhưng do TBN quá mạnh so với phần còn lại, rốt cuộc Del Bosque vẫn kết thúc giải đấu với chức vô địch. Trong trận chung kết, khả năng lên công về thủ của hậu vệ cánh Jordi Alba đã bù đắp cho việc thiếu các tiền vệ cánh đích thực. Nhưng sự chỉ trích ngày càng lớn với những trận đấu của TBN gần đây đã khiến Negredo, một số 9 đích thực, được đá chính nhiều hơn.
