"Hậu vệ cánh là những kẻ không thể thi đấu ở vị trí trung vệ, cũng chẳng đá được tiền vệ" - Carragher đã mỉa mai như thế nhằm châm chọc Gary Neville. Nhưng thực tế cho thấy nhận xét của Carragher quá phiến diện.

 
Roberto Carlos có thể coi là mẫu hậu vệ cánh điển hình: Thể lực tốt để đảm bảo lên công về thủ liên tục, có khả năng leo biên, có thể tạo đột biến bằng việc in dấu giày vào những bàn thắng. Quan trọng hơn, những cầu thủ như Carlos có thể trở thành quân bài quan trọng để khoét vào điểm yếu nơi hệ thống phòng ngự của đối thủ.
 
Dani Alves không chỉ là một hậu vệ cánh mà khai sinh ra một hình mẫu cầu thủ hoàn toàn mới.

Trong phần lớn chiều dài phát triển của lịch sử bóng đá, những hậu vệ cánh thường bị xem nhẹ khi họ đóng góp không thực sự cụ thể. Về mặt tranh cướp, cản phá, họ chẳng bằng trung vệ. Về mặt tấn công, tất nhiên họ hạn chế hơn các tiền vệ và tiền đạo. Nhưng nếu chỉ nhìn vào những con số mà đánh giá thấp vai trò của hậu vệ cánh lại là một sai lầm.
 
Mes que un fullback
 
Ở thời hiện tại khi các chiến thuật xuất hiện nhiều hơn, đa dạng hơn, hậu vệ cánh không còn mang ý nghĩa "hậu vệ" đơn thuần. Các chiến lược gia thời gian gần đây có xu hướng sử dụng những hậu vệ cánh thiên về tấn công hơn là phòng ngự.

Đơn cử như việc Jose Mourinho đẩy Marcos Rojo vào đá trung vệ, Darmian ngồi dự bị để trao cơ hội ra sân cho những Valencia, Daley Blind, các cầu thủ xuất thân tiền vệ đồng nghĩa sở hữu khả năng tấn công tốt hơn.
 
Đặc biệt là Blind, khả năng phòng ngự của cầu thủ người Hà Lan rất hạn chế nhưng Jose Mourinho vẫn ưu tiên cầu thủ này hơn so với những hậu vệ cánh thực thụ như Rojo, Darmian hay thậm chí là Luke Shaw vốn được biết đến công - thủ rất toàn diện.

Xu hướng trọng dụng các hậu vệ cánh tấn công tốt hơn phòng ngự đã trở nên phổ biến khắp châu Âu từ lâu. Các ví dụ điển hình như Dani Alves (Barcelona - Juventus), Hector Bellerin (Arsenal), Marcelo (Real Madrid), James Milner (Liverpool),...
 
Ngày Dani Alves chia tay Barcelona, trang Daily Mail của Anh có dòng tiêu đề là "mes que un fullback", có nghĩa hơn cả một hậu vệ cánh. Đây là cách chơi chữ của tờ báo nước Anh từ dòng khẩu hiệu "mes que un club" - hơn cả một câu lạc bộ - của đội bóng xứ Catalan. Điều đó bắt nguồn từ chính vị trí Dani Alves đảm nhận trên sân cỏ.

Ở Barcelona, Dani Alves trên lý thuyết đá ở vị trí hậu vệ phải nhưng trên thực tế, cầu thủ người Brazil có nhiều thời điểm còn đứng cao hơn cả tiền đạo, xâm nhập vòng cấm sâu hơn trung phong. Trong một thập kỷ gần nhất ngoài Lionel Messi, Dani Alves là cầu thủ có nhiều đường kiến tạo nhất tại La Liga (97), hơn cả những tiền vệ sáng tạo như Xavi hay Iniesta
 
Học giả chuyên nghiên cứu về bóng đá, Jonathan Wilson đã đưa ra khái niệm đầu tiên về mẫu hậu vệ cánh chơi theo kiểu một cầu thủ sáng tạo là "sui generis". Dani Alves là người đầu tiên mang danh "sui generis". Giờ thì ở châu Âu, nhiều hậu vệ biên khác cũng đang được sử dụng trong vai trò đó.
 
Hồi còn ở Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola sử dụng cặp Juan Bernat và Philipp Lahm - hai hậu vệ cánh - dâng cao như những tiền vệ để triển khai lối chơi 3-4-3. Người gần nhất định nghĩa lại về hậu vệ cánh là Antonio Conte khi ông biến Marcos Alonso thành một mũi nhọn tấn công thực thụ, thay vì phòng ngự là chính như trên lý thuyết về hậu vệ.
 
Mùa này, Marcos Alonso đã ghi đến 4 bàn, nhiều hơn bất kỳ hậu vệ nào khác tại Premier League. Trong trận đấu với Leicester, Marcos Alonso nhiều thời điểm còn đứng cao hơn cả Pedro, trung phong trên lý thuyết của Chelsea ở cách bố trí sơ đồ xuất phát. Rốt cuộc, cầu thủ người Tây Ban Nha lập cú đúp.  
 
Tư tưởng cũ từng khiến vai trò của các hậu vệ cánh không nổi bật. Sergio Ramos đã khởi nghiệp ở vị trí hậu vệ phải nhưng đã chuyển vào đá trung vệ. Gary Neville không được nhìn nhận xứng đáng nếu so với những đồng đội cùng ở thế hệ vàng Man Utd 1992 như Ryan Giggs, David Beckham - cũng đá cánh nhưng được bố trí ở hàng tiền vệ.
 
Bản thân Gary Neville cũng nhận xét về sự thay đổi về mặt tư duy trong việc đào tạo các hậu vệ cánh: "Xưa kia, 60%-70% thời lượng rèn luyện của hậu vệ cánh là học phòng ngự. Tôi khởi nghiệp với nền tảng mạnh về phòng thủ. Các hậu vệ cánh ngày nay khởi nghiệp với cốt lõi về kỹ thuật liên quan nhiều đến tấn công và sau đó họ mới học phòng ngự". 
 
Đó là nguyên nhân dẫn tới những hậu vệ cánh thiên về tấn công như Valencia (M.U), Kyle Walker và Danny Rose (Tottenham), Clyne và Milner (Liverpool),... Trong tương lai, định nghĩa về hậu vệ cánh chắc chắn sẽ thay đổi. Khái niệm "sui generis" hoàn toàn có thể được mở rộng để nói về những hậu vệ cánh thiên về tấn công.
