Trận cầu đinh cuối cùng của năm 2016 diễn ra theo đúng kịch bản mà giới chuyên môn đã chờ đợi. Vẫn biết rằng nếu không thay đổi lối chơi, sẽ không thể giành chiến thắng, nhưng Pep Guardiola vẫn thôi thúc các học trò đâm đầu vào đá.

HLV Pep Guardiola đã quyết định sử dụng Yaya Toure ở tuyến giữa và John Stones trong vai trò trung vệ. Đó là hai vị trí mà giới chuyên môn vẫn còn phân vân trong việc dự đoán cách sắp xếp đội hình của Pep Guardiola. Bằng hai cầu thủ này, nhà cầm quân người Tây Ban Nha không giấu nổi ý định tiếp tục thực hiện lối chơi kiểm soát bóng quen thuộc, dẫu cho ông biết rằng sẽ rất mạo hiểm với Man City khi đối thủ của họ là đội bóng chơi pressing tầm cao tốt nhất tại Premier League.

Quả thực, hiệp một trận đấu diễn ra cẳng khác nào một cơn ác mộng đối với Man City. Họ liên tục để mất bóng ở giữa sân và trong một tình huống như thế, Liverpool đã trừng phạt thích đáng những sai lầm của đội bóng áo xanh. Lối chơi thể lực của Liverpool giúp họ khiến cho The Citizens phải chóng mặt, về cả nghĩa đen lẫn nghĩa bóng. Ngay cả với một cầu thủ có thể hình tốt và giàu kinh nghiệm trận mạc như Yaya Toure cũng thường xuyên bị những cái bóng áo đỏ vây quanh nhanh thoăn thoắt và đoạt bóng dễ dàng.

Từ cách sắp xếp nhân sự của hai chiến lược gia, cho đến lối chơi của mỗi đội và cục diện trận đấu đều nằm trong một kịch bản mà tất cả đã dự đoán từ trước. Liverpool thực hiện bắt người ở ngay bên phần sân của Man City, nhưng nếu không thành công, họ cũng lùi về rất nhanh chóng. Ưu thế về khả năng tranh chấp và sức bền giúp đội chủ nhà thực hiện lối chơi chủ động như vậy.

Tất nhiên vẫn còn đó rất nhiều lỗ hổng trong lối chơi của The Kop, song những con người của Man City chưa thực sự đủ sắc bén để tìm ra những khoảng trống ấy. Không những thế, sự thiếu hoà hợp trong lối chơi của đội khách cùng khiến họ thường xuyên phải đón nhận những tình huống phản công nguy hiểm do đội hình đã dâng quá cao. Nếu như các cầu thủ tấn công của Liverpool sắc sảo hơn, họ đã ghi nhiều hơn một bàn thắng.

Aguero hoàn toàn tắt điện suốt 90 phút

Pep Guardiola vẫn trung thành với triết lý của mình cho dù đã biết khả năng thua cuộc là rất cao, song vẫn phải dành lời khen cho tài năng của HLV Jurgen Klopp. Điểm đáng chú ý nhất trong cách sắp xếp nhân sự của chiến lược gia người Đức chính là sơ đồ 4-3-3 với Firmino đóng vai trò tiền đạo ảo. Điều đó có nghĩa là Emre Can đã được sử dụng ngay từ đầu thay vì tiền đạo Origi. Với thêm một tiền vệ năng nổ và bắt người tốt ở khu vực giữa sân, Liverpool đã thành công trong việc bóp nghẹt khu trung tuyến.

Sư bế tắc của Man City được thể hiện qua việc Sergio Aguero gần như không một lần có cơ hội dứt điểm. Cả 2 lần ngôi sao người Argentina ra chân sút đều chỉ là những tình huống nhằm giải toả áp lực, bởi anh luôn bị các cầu thủ phòng ngự của Liverpool đeo bám quyết liệt.

Ngoài ra, một ngòi nổ khác của The Citizens là Kevin De Bruyne thậm chí chỉ tạo ra 20 đường chuyền thành công trong trận đấu, trong số này, không một lần anh tạo ra được cơ hội dứt điểm cho các đồng đội. Với một tiền vệ đã thực hiện thành công 9 đường kiến tạo thành công trong mùa giải, cũng như có số lần tạo cơ hội nhiều nhất, thì trận đấu này thực sự là nỗi thất vọng của cá nhân De Bruyne, nhưng cũng thật khó trách ngôi sao người Bỉ bởi anh có quá ít khoảng trống để làm nên những điều kỳ diệu.

Sterling không thể vượt qua Milner

Ngòi nổ cuối cùng của Man City cũng bị khoá tương đối chặt, đó chính là Raheem Sterling. Cầu thủ có khả năng qua người tốt nhất bên phía đội khách đã có một ngày trở lại “nhà” cũ Anfield tồi tệ. Anh chỉ thành công ở 5 trong tổng số 14 nỗ lực qua người. Hầu hết trong những tình huống phải đối mặt với người đàn anh dày dạn kinh nghiệm James Milner, Sterling đều phải nhận phần thua. Đó là những tình huống mà Sterling chẳng khác nào đã đâm đầu vào đá, cũng như cái cách Pep Guardiola không thể xoay chuyển trận đấu vậy.

Aguero và De Bruyne bất lực ở khu vực trung lộ, còn phía bên cánh, Sterling cũng chẳng thể tạo ra điều gì đặc biệt. Man City đã tung ra 17 đường căng ngang và tạt bóng cho cả trận đấu, nhưng chỉ một trong số đó tìm đến đúng cái bóng áo xanh. Liverpool thực sự đã tạo ra một màn trình diễn tâm phục khẩu phục, nhưng Man City cũng đã không chọn một con đường mạo hiểm khác để có cơ hội kiếm ít nhất là một điểm.
