Pha lập công duy nhất của trung vệ đội trưởng Richard Dunne đã giữ lại 3 điểm quý giá ở lại sân City of Manchester sau cuộc đối đầu với Middlesbrough.

Dưới sự chứng kiến của 36.720 CĐB trên sân City of Manchester (con số khán giả thấp nhất tại đây kể từ khi Man City rời sân Maine Road), trận đấu bắt đầu với nhịp độ khá chậm khi bóng chủ yếu lởn vởn ở khu vực giữa sân. Lợi thế sân nhà cùng hàng tiền vệ năng nổ giúp Man City kiểm soát bóng nhiều hơn và dần áp đặt được thế trận.

Mãi đến phút 20, đội bóng áo xanh da trời mới tạo được cơ hội nguy hiểm đầu tiên về phía khung thành của thủ môn Mark Schwarzer. Nhận đường chọc khe thông minh của Joey Barton, Dickov băng xuống đối mặt với thủ thành người Australia. Tuy nhiên, cú lốp bóng cuối cùng anh lại đi trệch khung gỗ.

Ít phút sau, Samaras dùng tốc độ và sự càn lướt vượt qua một hậu vệ Boro rồi sút bóng đập người Schwarzer đi ra hết đường biên ngang. Và chính từ quả đá phạt góc tiếp theo, Barton đã chuyền điểm rơi chính xác để đội trưởng Richard Dunne băng vào đánh đầu cận thành tung lưới đội khách.

Trong những phút tiếp theo, đội bóng của Stuart Pearce vẫn chiếm ưu thế và tạo được một vài tình huống dứt điểm từ xa nguy hiểm của Samaras hay Joey Barton. Trong khi đó, hàng tiền vệ Boro thi đấu rời rạc khiến cặp tiền đạo Yakubu và Euell ở tuyến trên đói bóng.

Bước sang hiệp 2, thế trận trở nên cân bằng hơn khi 2 đội thi đấu giằng co. Phải từ phút 75 trở đi, trận đấu mới trở nên sôi nổi khi đội khách chủ trương đẩy cao đội hình hòng tìm kiếm bàn gỡ, còn Man City cũng chơi phản công nhanh khá sắc nét.

Kể từ khi vào sân thay người, Vassell tỏ ra cực kỳ nguy hiểm với tốc độ và khả năng kỹ thuật rất tốt. Chính anh đã 2 lần liên tiếp tạo ra những tình huống sóng gió về phía khung thành Middlesbrough trong những phút cuối trận. Tuy thế, khả năng dứt điểm hạn chế khiến tỉ số không được nhân đôi.

Phía Boro cũng cố gắng dồn lên ép sân và suýt chút nữa có được bàn thắng gỡ hòa sau sai lầm bắt bóng không dính của thủ thành Nicky Weaver. Ngoài ra, trung vệ Robert Huth cũng có pha đánh đầu vọt xà rất đáng tiếc ở phút 86.

Khi trọng tài nổi hổi còi kết thúc 90 phút thi đấu chính thức, các CĐV chủ nhà rất hạnh phúc vì Man City đã giành chiến thắng và cải thiện thứ hạng trên bảng tổng sắp.
