Chiếc áo số 7 cùng lời hứa của HLV Brendan Rodgers về một vị trí nơi trung tâm hàng tiền vệ Liverpool nhiều khả năng sẽ biến James Milner trở thành một trong những nhân tố quan trọng bậc nhất bên phía đội bóng chủ sân Anfield ở mùa giải sắp tới.

Trước thời điểm cập bến Liverpool, cá nhân Milner không ít lần đã lên tiếng bày tỏ niềm khao khát muốn được chơi bóng ở khu vực trung tuyến, giống như một “số 8” đích thực. Mặc dù vậy, môi trường tại Man City rõ ràng là quá khắc nghiệt đối với ngôi sao người Anh, khi mà những Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, Fernando… mới chính là sự lựa chọn hàng đầu của HLV Manuel Pellegrini. Hệ quả, Milner thường xuyên phải “đánh bóng” băng ghế dự bị sân Etihad hoặc nếu có ra sân, anh cũng chỉ được trao cơ hội ở hai cánh. Điều này cũng chính là nguyên nhân dẫn đến việc cầu thủ 29 tuổi đi đến quyết định gia nhập The Kop theo dạng chuyển nhượng tự do trong “phiên chợ hè” năm nay.

Cách đây ít ngày, người hâm mộ Liverpool vừa được chứng kiến Milner nhận chiếc áo số 7 mà Luis Suarez để lại. Đương nhiên, sẽ không bao giờ có chuyện cựu tiền vệ Man City đá trung phong cắm giống như chân sút người Uruguay. Thay vào đó, các CĐV The Kop đang kỳ vọng rằng cầu thủ người Anh sẽ trở thành sự thay thế xứng đáng dành cho vị trí mà “lão tướng” Steven Gerrard để lại. Trên thực tế, chính HLV Brendan Rodgers cũng từng hứa sẽ để Milner thi đấu trong vai trò của một tiền vệ trung tâm thuần túy ở mùa giải sắp tới. Mặc dù vậy, xét trên nhiều khía cạnh, đây rõ ràng là một nhiệm vụ không hề đơn giản dành cho ngôi sao 29 tuổi.

Dễ dàng nhận thấy rằng, Milner vốn dĩ không phải mẫu cầu thủ sở hữu những phẩm chất của một thủ lĩnh thực thụ, giống như đội trưởng Gerrard trước đây. Thay vào đó, ưu điểm lớn nhất của tiền vệ người Anh chính là khả năng hoạt động cần cù, năng nổ và nhiệt tình. Bản thân Milner, thậm chí có thể đảm nhiệm gần như mọi vị trí trên sân, từ tiền vệ cánh, hậu vệ cánh, tiền vệ phòng ngự, con thoi, hộ công cho đến trung phong cắm đều không thành vấn đề. Tuy nhiên, để tin tưởng rằng cựu cầu thủ Man City sẽ trở thành nhân tố giữ vai trò cầm trịch lối chơi bên phía Liverpool trong mùa giải sắp tới, xem chừng vẫn là một nhận định có phần hơi khiên cưỡng.

So với “lão tướng” Gerrard, Milner có thể phần nào nhanh nhẹn hơn, mạnh mẽ hơn nhưng rõ ràng, nhãn quan chiến thuật và khả năng quan sát chưa bao giờ là những ưu điểm của tiền vệ 29 tuổi. Chính bởi vậy, thay vì quá kỳ vọng vào việc Milner sẽ trở thành một nhà tổ chức giống như G8 trong quá khứ, người hâm mộ Liverpool nên sớm nghĩ rằng anh sẽ là một “máy quét” đa năng bên cạnh Henderson. Theo dự đoán từ phía giới chuyên môn, nhiều khả năng HLV Rodgers sẽ lựa chọn bộ đôi Henderson-Milner là những người đá chính ở khu vực trung tâm hàng tiền vệ Liverpool trong mùa giải năm sau. Về mặt lý thuyết, cả hai cái tên này đều là những cầu thủ sở hữu lối chơi thiên về thể lực và tốc độ. Do đó, nhiệm vụ sáng tạo bên phía The Kop có lẽ sẽ được chuyển sang cho các hộ công hoạt động phía trên, như Coutinho, Sterling, Lallana hay tân binh Firmino chẳng hạn.

Milner là mẫu cầu thủ cực kỳ đa năng đồng thời sở hữu lối chơi hết sức năng nổ

Theo thống kê, tính trung bình mỗi trận tại Premier League 2014/2015, Milner sở hữu 1,7 cú tắc bóng thành công; 0,7 tình huống đánh chặn chuẩn xác cùng 1,8 pha thắng bóng bổng. Bên cạnh đó, ngôi sao người Anh cũng ghi được tổng cộng 5 bàn thắng đồng thời thực hiện 7 đường chuyền kiến tạo thành công cho các đồng đội, hiệu suất khá ấn tượng đối với một cầu thủ không có vị trí ổn định trong đội hình Man City. Nhìn chung, sự đa năng trong lối chơi của Milner sẽ không chỉ mang đến “sức chiến đấu” cần thiết cho hàng tiền vệ Liverpool mà còn là chìa khóa giúp cho thầy trò HLV Rodgers tìm kiếm thêm những giải pháp mới ở những thời điểm mà đội bóng chủ sân Anfield gặp bế tắc.

Cá nhân Milner, có thể không thực sự xuất sắc nếu xét trên bất cứ khía cạnh nào. Tuy nhiên, sự xuất hiện của ngôi sao người Anh chắc chắn sẽ trở thành tiền đề quan trọng để HLV Rodgers xây dựng nên một đội hình Liverpool theo chiều hướng cơ bản, đồng đều và đạt được độ cân bằng nhất định. Thời điểm hiện tại, bên cạnh cựu cầu thủ Man xanh thì ban lãnh đạo The Kop cũng đã mang về sân Anfield thêm khá nhiều bản hợp đồng đình đám khác, tiêu biểu như Firmino, Danny Ings hay Clyne… Tất cả đều đang hứa hẹn sẽ là những “làn gió” mới mẻ giúp cho đội bóng vùng Merseyside thay đổi diện mạo một cách hoàn toàn sau khi vừa trải qua quãng thời gian khủng hoảng trầm trọng.
