Sự du nhập vào Anh

Sơ đồ 2-2-6 đã làm thay đổi tư duy của người Anh về bóng đá. Trước đó, các cầu thủ Anh đến từ nhiều nơi và không có thời gian để tập luyện cùng nhau. Do đó, họ không thể dung hòa giữa những cá tính lớn luôn mang trong mình "dòng máu hiệp sĩ". Trong khi đó, người Scotland hoàn toàn chiếm ưu thế trong giai đoạn đầu của bóng đá hiện đại nhờ lối chơi khoa học khi kết hợp được những cá nhân với nhau. Bằng chứng là từ năm 1874-1890, Queen Park đại diện cho người Scotland đã thắng Sheffield đại diện cho bóng đá Anh đến 14 lần trong 17 trận gặp nhau, chỉ thua một và hòa hai lần.
 
Arsenal là một trong những đội bóng đầu tiên du nhập chiến thuật kết hợp của người Scotland.

Queen Park FC với "chiến thuật kết hợp" dần tạo nên sức ảnh hưởng lớn đến các đội bóng tại Anh. Đầu tiên, phong cách này dần ảnh hưởng đến những đội bóng ở phía Bắc và Trung du nước Anh, những nơi gần biên giới với Scotland và thường đá giao hữu với những đội bóng đến từ nước láng giềng. Đồng thời, các câu lạc bộ tại đây cũng mời những cầu thủ bóng đá hay những chuyên gia bóng đá chuyên nghiệp từ Scotland đến để phổ biến những kiến thức về "chiến thuật kết hợp".
 
Những đội bóng Anh từ Sunderland, Preston North End, Liverpool, Bolton Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday và Blackburn Rovers đại diện cho những đội bóng phía Bắc, rồi Aston Villa và Derby County đại diện cho miền Trung và Arsenal, Fulham, Southampton đại diện cho miền Nam đều mời những chuyên gia đến từ Scotland đến để học tập "chiến thuật kết hợp". Đồng thời, họ cũng tập luyện theo cách Queen Park FC từng làm với mong muốn cải thiện lối chơi.
 
Đại học Cambridge A.F.C: Cái nôi chiến thuật 2-3-5
 
Mặc dù không phải là đội bóng chuyên nghiệp nhưng đội bóng của Đại học Cambridge lại là một trong những đội sử dụng "chiến thuật kết hợp" đầu tiên và sử dụng nó hiệu quả. Nguyên nhân một phần bởi bộ luật bóng đá đầu tiên trong lịch sử bắt nguồn từ chính Cambridge. Không những thế, Cambridge có một lợi thế nữa mà các đội bóng "chuyên nghiệp" của Anh thời bấy giờ không có, đó là các cầu thủ có thời gian tập luyện cùng nhau.
 
2-3-5 được coi là khởi đầu cho chiến thuật của bóng đá hiện đại.

Do cùng học trong một trường Đại học nên các cầu thủ có thời gian rỗi để tập luyện cùng nhau, đây là một nền tảng quan trọng để ra đời "chiến thuật kết hợp" tại Queen Park FC. Tuy nhiên, họ không phải là một đội bóng chuyên nghiệp như Queen Park FC nên không có sự "chức nghiệp hóa" đối với những cầu thủ trên sân nên thời kỳ đầu, họ không nghĩ ra việc đề ra một chiến thuật cụ thể như kiểu sơ đồ 2-2-6. Nhưng về sau khi học hỏi được chiến thuật kết hợp, đội bóng của đại học Cambridge đã phát minh ra một sơ đồ làm thay đổi tư duy chiến thuật bóng đá hiện đại. 
 
Năm 1883, đội bóng Đại học Cambridge chính là nơi đầu tiên phát minh ra sơ đồ chiến thuật 2-3-5, sơ đồ hình "kim tự tháp" với hai hậu vệ, ba tiền vệ và năm tiền đạo. Đây là sơ đồ chiến thuật đầu tiên thể hiện đầy đủ và rõ ràng của việc phân chia rõ ràng ranh giới giữa phạm vi phòng ngự và các phương án tấn công. Sau thành công của đội bóng Đại học Cambridge, sơ đồ 2-3-5 trở thành chuẩn mực cho các đội bóng về sau.
 
Có thể nói, sơ đồ 2-3-5 xuất phát từ đội bóng Đại học Cambridge là khởi nguyên cho bóng đá hiện đại cho đến ngày nay, khi nó phân rõ giới tuyến giữa tấn công và phòng ngự, đồng thời đề cao việc các cầu thủ phải có sự phối hợp. Đồng thời, những chuyên gia bóng đá thời đó bắt đầu nhận ra sự quan trọng trong việc cần phải cải tiến và phát minh ra những chiến thuật bóng đá mới.
 
Dù quê hương là Scotland nhưng "chiến thuật kết hợp" lại được người Anh quảng bá và lan dần ra khắp châu Âu, cũng như một số nước tại vùng Nam Mỹ.
