Nếu chỉ nhìn vào tỷ số, chắc chắn không ít người sẽ cho rằng đây là một cú sốc lớn bởi Aston Villa là tân binh của Premier League 2019/20 còn Liverpool là nhà ĐKVĐ Champions League. Song với việc The Kop chỉ sử dụng đội hình U23 vì lý do bất khả kháng thì thất bại này lại trở nên quá đỗi bình thường.

Khi trận tứ kết Cúp Liên đoàn Anh 2019/20 được ấn định diễn ra vào ngày 18/12 thì đã có rất nhiều sự phản ứng từ Liverpool bởi đơn giản đúng vào thời điểm đó The Kop phải có mặt ở ... Qatar để dự FIFA Club World Cup 2019. Thậm chí, HLV Juergen Klopp còn dọa sẽ rút khỏi giải đấu nếu FA (Liên đoàn bóng đá Anh) không đổi lịch phù hợp. Tuy nhiên, phản đối thì phản đối, cuối cùng The Kop vẫn phải chấp nhận đá trận tứ kết diễn ra theo đúng lịch được ấn định.

Vì thế, tất nhiên Liverpool không thể sử dụng đội hình mạnh nhất cho mặt trận "hạng 4" tại xứ sở sương mù. Những thành viên của đội một The Kop đã lên đường bay sang Qatar và đội U23 sẽ đại diện cho nhà ĐKVĐ Champions League hành quân tới sân Villa Park, chạm trán chủ nhà Aston Villa. Dẫn dắt đội bóng này là Neil Critchley, người đang làm HLV đội trẻ.

Cuối tuần trước, đội U23 của Liverpool vừa hòa U23 Chelsea 1-1 ở giải Premier League trẻ. Đội hình mà The Kop sử dụng toàn bộ là những cầu thủ còn vô danh. Có chăng chỉ vài cái tên từng xuất hiện trong đợt giao hữu hè 2019 của Liverpool chuẩn bị cho mùa giải này như Caoimhin Kelleher; Ki-Jana Hoever, Sepp van den Berg.

Vòng trước tại cúp Liên đoàn Anh, Liverpool cũng tung ra sân nhiều cầu thủ trẻ khi gặp Arsenal (hòa 5-5 và thắng sau loạt luân lưu 11m) nhưng hôm đó, The Kop vẫn còn một số cựu binh trong đội hình như James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hay Divock Origi để dìu dắt lứa đàn em.

Tuy nhiên trái với đồn đoán ban đầu (Aston Villa sẽ thể hiện thái độ thi đấu nghiêm túc với sân chơi này bằng cách tung ra sân đội hình mạnh), tân binh Premier League thay đến 10 vị trí trên sân so với trận thua Sheffield United cách đây vài ngày ở sân chơi chính. Nói cách khác, Aston Villa cũng chỉ sử dụng đội hình phụ, tất nhiên không đến mức "trẻ người non dạ" như đối thủ Liverpool.

Nhờ vậy mà đội U23 Liverpool thêm tự tin để nhập cuộc một cách ngang ngửa với đối thủ chắc chắn hơn về tuổi nghề lẫn kinh nghiệm thi đấu, bất chấp phải thi đấu trên sân khách. Cơ hội nguy hiểm đầu tiên thuộc về chính lứa trẻ của đội bóng vùng Merseyside khi phút thứ 10, Harvey Elliott - tài năng mới 16 tuổi - dẫn bóng từ cánh phải vào khu vực 16m50 rồi tung ra cú sút căng, buộc thủ môn đội chủ nhà phải trổ tài.

Ở cú đá phạt góc ngay sau đó, Luis Longstaff (sinh năm 2001) được trao cơ hội đối diện trực tiếp với Nylan ở cự ly gần song phần thắng đã thuộc về thủ thành của Aston Villa. Tuy nhiên yếu tố kinh nghiệm đã sớm thể hiện được vai trò ở trận đấu này. Phút 14, Conor Hourihane - một tiền vệ trưởng thành 28 tuổi của Aston Villa - thực hiện cú sút phạt cực kỳ khó chịu từ cánh phải và thủ môn sinh năm 1998 Caoimhin Kelleher của Liverpool một phần do bị che khuất tầm nhìn đã phản ứng chậm, để trái bóng bay vào lưới.

Chưa kịp hoàn hồn, đội khách phải nhận tiếp bàn thua thứ 2. Phút 17, quả tạt của Ahmed El Mohamady (32 tuổi) bên cánh phải đã chạm vào người Morgan Boyes (kém El Mohamady hơn một giáp) đang theo kèm nên bóng đã thay đổi quỹ đạo, trở nên quá khó với thủ thành Kelleher. Song một đội bóng trẻ thường rất máu và chơi ngẫu hứng, nhất là khi vào trận với tâm lý hoàn toàn thoải mái.

Phút 27, lại là tài năng mới 16 tuổi Harvey Elliott có pha tâng bóng qua đầu cực điệu nghệ để mang đến cơ hội dứt điểm cho Christie-Davies (sinh năm 1997) nhưng một lần nữa thủ môn đã 29 tuổi của Aston Villa cứu nguy thành công cho đội nhà. Dù bị dẫn hai bàn nhưng "Liverpool trẻ" không hề nao núng mà vẫn miệt mài thi đấu cống hiến bằng sức trẻ.

Tiếc thay, họ lại phải nhận tiếp bàn thua vào phút 37. Pha xử lý lỗi của Sepp van den Berg (2001) đã mở ra thời cơ cho Jonathan Kodjia (30 tuổi) thoát xuống đối mặt với Kelleher và nhẹ nhàng lập công cho đội chủ nhà bằng cú vẩy má ngoài đơn giản. Trước khi hiệp 1 khép lại, tỷ số được nâng lên 4-0 và người ghi bàn vẫn là Kodjia với pha đệm lòng tung nóc lưới ở cự ly gần sau quả căng ngang do El Mohamady thực hiện.

Kể từ tháng 5/2015 (thua Stoke 1-6 tại Premier League), Liverpool mới lại phải nhận đến 4 bàn thua trong hiệp 1 ở một trận đấu chính thức. Song chẳng ai có thể trách dàn tài năng trẻ của "Lữ đoàn đỏ" bởi họ đã chơi hết mình. Nếu thủ môn Nyland của Aston Villa không chơi xuất sắc thì U23 Liverpool đã phải ghi được vài bàn. Phút 55, Nyland lại phản xạ quá hay để từ chối cú thoát xuống phá bẫy việt vị và dứt điểm của Herbie Kane (sinh năm 1998).

Dĩ nhiên Aston Villa cũng không thiếu cơ hội để ghi thêm bàn thắng nhưng lần lượt bị bỏ lỡ bởi Kodjia rồi Trezeguet dù khả năng ăn bàn rất cao. Trong khi đó, tuy không nhiều nhưng thi thoảng U23 Liverpool cũng có được pha uy hiếp ra trò về cầu môn Aston Villa. Chỉ có điều dàn "Lữ đoàn trẻ" không làm sao hạ gục nổi thủ thành đối phương.

Dẫu vậy kết quả chung cuộc của trận đấu vẫn không dừng lại ở con số 4-0. Phút bù giờ thứ 2, tiền đạo vào sân thay người Wesley đã chấm dứt 2 tháng tịt ngòi sau cú sút chéo góc hoàn hảo. Như vậy, Liverpool đã bị loại như dự kiến ở cúp Liên đoàn Anh khi mà họ chẳng còn lựa chọn nào khác còn Aston Villa dễ dàng tiến bước vào bán kết một phần nhờ sự ủng hộ của "hoàn cảnh".
