Trong vài năm trở lại đây, những cuộc so tài giữa Liverpool và Man City thường diễn ra rất hấp dẫn, kịch tính với chất lượng cao. Cuộc đụng độ diễn ra tại sân King Power cũng không phải ngoại lệ khi 2 đội đã cùng nhau cống hiến cho khán giả một trận cầu mãn nhãn.

Chỉ sau 3 phút bóng lăn, tiền đạo Mohamed Salah của Liverpool đã tạo ra tình huống đáng chú ý đầu tiên của trận đấu với pha đảo bóng loại bỏ Cancelo trước khi tung cú đá chân trái đưa bóng chệch cột dọc. Theo thống kê, trong hiệp 1 Liverpool chỉ tung ra được 1 cú dứt điểm trúng đích, nhưng đó lại chính là pha bóng dẫn đến bàn thắng của hậu vệ cánh phải Alexander-Arnold.

Phút 21, Salah có pha nhả bóng rất vừa tầm cho Alexander-Arnold dứt điểm một chạm từ tuyến 2 đưa bóng đập cả vào đầu Ake lẫn cột dọc trước khi làm tung lưới Man City. Theo thống kê, đây là bàn thắng thứ 10 được ghi từ ngoài vòng cấm trong tổng số 13 pha lập công của Alexander-Arnold cho Liverpool, một con số rất ấn tượng.

Bị đẩy vào thế phải rượt đuổi tỷ số, các cầu thủ Man City thi đấu nỗ lực hơn và họ đã tạo ra không ít sóng gió trước khung thành đối phương. Đáng tiếc là cả De Bruyne, Mahrez hay Haaland đều bỏ lỡ những cơ hội hết sức rõ ràng. Cũng cần phải dành những lời khen tặng cho Adrian, thủ môn đã chơi rất xuất sắc khi thực hiện tới 4 pha cứu thua ấn tượng trong 45 phút đầu.

Đây là quãng thời gian Haaland bị theo kèm rất sát và chỉ chạm bóng vỏn vẹn 8 lần (con số này với 3 tiền đạo Salah, Diaz và Nunez của Liverpool đều trên 20). Mặc dù vậy, chân sút người Na Uy cũng cho thấy sự nguy hiểm với pha tỳ đè loại bỏ Robertson trước khi nhoài người dứt điểm buộc Adrian phải trổ tài ở phút 34.

Sau giờ nghỉ mọi chuyện cũng chẳng sáng sủa hơn với Haaland, nhưng Man City lại tìm được bàn gỡ ở phút 70 nhờ công của 2 cầu thủ vào sân thay người là Foden và Alvarez. Ở pha bóng này, tân binh Alvarez đã đưa được bóng vào lưới Liverpool sau tình huống Foden không chiến thắng được thủ thành Adrian từ cự ly gần.

Ban đầu trọng tài không công nhận bàn thắng khi xác định cầu thủ của Man City đã việt vị, nhưng sau đó ông tham khảo VAR và thay đổi quyết định của mình. Phút 78, trọng tài lại một lần nữa cần đến sự trợ giúp của VAR và lần này Liverpool là đội hưởng lợi.
